Trans-Pacific flights widely canceled as downturn in sea freight market continues

2025 04/24

The international shipping market has fluctuated violently recently, and the capacity of the main routes from Asia to North America has been greatly reduced. Industry data show that China's export orders fell by 20% year-on-year in mid-April, and some production capacity has accelerated to Southeast Asia. Some suppliers reported that North American importers are stepping up their stockpiling to avoid risks, resulting in a periodic disruption of the supply chain.

Capacity regulation data show that the capacity of the Asia-North America West Coast route will be reduced by 12% in the early summer season of 2025, and the East Coast route will drop by 14%. Shipping companies have urgently taken measures to suspend flights, and the number of suspended flights per week has increased sharply from 60,000 TEUs to 368,000 TEUs. Blank voyages have become an important means of regulating freight rates.

It is worth noting that the transatlantic route has not experienced synchronous fluctuations, which may be related to the temporary tariff truce agreement between the United States and Europe. At present, the shipping industry generally adopts a short-term response strategy, temporarily suspends the implementation of long-term supply chain adjustments, and waits for the trade environment to become clear.
