China-US Shipping Freight Rates Soar

2025 06/04

Recent China-US trade has seen a peak in shipments, and shipping market rates have risen significantly. Shanghai Shipping Exchange data show that the SCFI Composite Freight Index reached 2072.71 points, up 30.68% weekly. The U.S. line became the main force: Shanghai to U.S. West and U.S. East freight rates rose 57.92% and 45.73% to USD 5172/FEU and USD 6243/FEU respectively.

This round of rise stems from the enterprises' “rush for export” which pushed up the demand, and despite the fact that the capacity was restored to the pre-epidemic level, the tightness of the cabin space and the congestion in the ports exacerbated the contradiction between the demand and the supply. Shipping companies from other routes to deploy ships need time, the United States line freight rates in the short term is difficult to fall back, some companies have increased the peak season surcharge.

European routes rose simultaneously: Shanghai to Europe, the Mediterranean Sea tariffs rose 20.5%, 31.49% to 1587 U.S. dollars / TEU and 3061 U.S. dollars / TEU. the industry is expected to U.S. line tariffs will continue to run high until the middle and end of June, the market, “a cabin is hard to find” situation is difficult to ease for the time being.
