The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has released the 66th edition of the Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR), which includes significant updates to the air transport regulations for lithium batteries. The new rules take effect from January 1, 2025.
New UN Numbers and Packaging Instructions:
UN 3551: Sodium-ion batteries
UN 3552: Sodium-ion batteries (installed in equipment or packed with equipment)
Battery Capacity Limits and Packaging Requirements:
From 2026, the capacity of lithium-ion and lithium-metal batteries must not exceed 30%.
A 3-meter stacking test requirement has been added in PI 966-II, PI 967-I/II, PI 969-II, and PI 970-I/II clauses to ensure packaging strength and safety.
Label and Marking Changes:
"Lithium Battery Label" was renamed to "Battery Label."
"Class 9 Hazardous Goods Label - Lithium Batteries" was renamed "Class 9 Hazardous Goods Label - Lithium Ion and Sodium-Ion Batteries."
