As demand rebounds and inflation pressures mount, labor disputes at U.S. and global ports are intensifying.
According to foreign media reports, the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) announced on June 10 that it would suspend negotiations scheduled for June 11 with the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) due to concerns over the use of automation technology at some U.S. gateway ports.
The ILA, the largest maritime labor union in North America, represents 85,000 dockworkers on the East Coast, Gulf Coast, Puerto Rico, the Great Lakes, and major U.S. rivers. Its members also include dockworkers from Eastern Canada and the Bahamas.
With the current contract nearing expiration, the threat of work stoppage is imminent, and the impact will be immediate. Some U.S. retailers are reportedly considering contingency plans.
Recently, several ports have started strike actions. All major ports in France, especially container hub ports Le Havre and Marseille-Fos, are facing a month-long strike threat, expected to cause severe operational disruptions. Local news reports indicate that the strike has significantly impacted port operations and directly affected road transportation.
